These Wounds

I opened up my chest when you came
Pushing my eager fingers into skin so
Tough that I made it down
To the bone before
I could get at the flesh
Digging deeper until blood
Warm and fresh ran down my
Twisting arms, so unprepared but
Breaking piece by piece the cage
That held my tenderness inside
My voice a victim of the slaughter
Hurtful need snatching
My words away as
This broken breast
Lay wide and free in the breeze
That was your love
And now these wounds won’t heal
The anguish festering in the heat
Of bitter words that can never
Be taken back
My heart still
beating and exposed
Oh my heart, and
These wounds
