365 Days of Gratefulness: Day 14

Because I want to be intentional about expressing my gratitude even when I don’t feel like it…

Day 14: Looking for a reason to be grateful, I have no farther to look than my oldest daughter. Haleigh–an anxious, self conscious child–has been blooming before my eyes this past year. While her stature was predicted at birth (she is only 10 and standing strong at about 5’6″), no one could have predicted the level of maturity she has developed in the last 6 months.

I have watched my first best baby turn into a little lady. Her smiles, her fidgets, her command of the English language, her voracious reading habits, her curiosity all make the journey of parenting worthwhile. She is one (of two) of my greatest accomplishments in life.

The thing that I love most about this one is the unbridled exuberance she has in all things. Today, we are going to the birthday party of a friend we have not seen in ages. The excitement she experienced at the idea of a “party” was enough to pull me out of the dull exhaustion I have been battling all week. I am only going for her; yet somehow, I know that I will be the one who benefits from the outing.

She has that affect on us all: her joy becomes our joy.

Despite me being super hard on her (we are so different in particular ways, with her being so loose and random and me being so detail oriented and orderly), she continues to grow in grace and graciousness. I am glad that God thought enough of me to let me be her mom. I hope that she feels the same about me.

“Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭8:18‬ ‭KJV‬‬
