Book Burning

One simple lie was all it took.
You turned away; I screamed out:
“LOOK!
You’re right we’ll never be the same
The bridge went up
In bitter flame
Long time ago. All that remained
was me singing this sad refrain–
No more! No need to lie. Admit
it’s over. Let’s get on with it.”
You stuttered sounds incoherent.
I wondered where that slick shit went.
Did my words catch you by surprise?
You stared helpless into my eyes,
Couldn’t figure out what made me stay
Or what made me brave and strong this day.
I smile, knowing I got you shook:
You turned the page; I burned the book.
